Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow, deploying at least 34 drones, marking the biggest assault on the Russian capital since the war began in 2022. This attack resulted in major airports diverting flights and left at least one person injured.
Russia’s defense ministry reported intercepting 36 additional drones over western regions, claiming Kyiv orchestrated the attempted “terrorist attack” which was ultimately thwarted. Following the attack, Moscow’s airports resumed operations after the flight disruptions.
With a metropolitan population of over 21 million, Moscow is one of Europe’s largest cities. Russia claimed that Ukraine launched a record 145 drones, of which 62 were shot down. Ukraine also confirmed an attack on an arsenal in Russia’s Bryansk region.
The war has intensified the role of drones, with Russia and Ukraine transforming commercial drones into lethal weapons. Moscow has created electronic “umbrellas” to shield against drone strikes, especially over strategic buildings, with advanced air defense measures.
Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled these attacks “terrorism,” vowing a stern response. Despite the ongoing conflict, Moscow residents continued their daily routines without evident alarm, highlighting the resilience of city life amid the war.
