In a significant move to appeal to women voters, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has proposed that the government or insurance companies cover the costs of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Trump emphasized his support for making IVF treatments accessible, stating, “Under the Trump administration, we are going to be paying for that treatment. Or we’re going to be mandating that the insurance company pay.”
Currently, health insurance companies in the United States are not mandated to cover IVF treatments, which can be prohibitively expensive. Trump reiterated his position, highlighting the option of implementing a mandate for insurance companies to cover these costs. At a Michigan rally, Trump further emphasized this point, telling the audience, “Your government will pay for or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with IVF treatment.”
Trump’s proposal aims to address the high costs associated with IVF, which can run into tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, he announced plans to allow new parents to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes, further emphasizing his call for more family-friendly policies. “We want more babies,” Trump declared, highlighting his commitment to supporting family growth in the US.
Trump’s Position on Abortion Rights
While outlining his stance on reproductive issues, Trump criticized Florida’s strict six-week abortion ban. He expressed his belief that six weeks is too short and indicated his support for allowing abortions in cases where the pregnancy threatens the mother’s life or results from rape or incest. “I’m going to be voting that we need more than six weeks,” Trump said during his NBC interview.
However, Trump’s campaign quickly clarified his position, noting that he has not yet decided how he will vote on Florida’s ballot initiative regarding abortion restrictions. His press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated, “President Trump has not yet said how he will vote on the ballot initiative in Florida. He simply reiterated that he believes six weeks is too short.”
Reproductive Rights in the 2024 US Election
The issue of reproductive rights has emerged as a pivotal point in the 2024 presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticized Trump and the Republican Party, accusing them of threatening women’s access to essential health services, including birth control and IVF treatments. At the Democratic National Convention, Harris claimed that Trump and his allies seek to restrict access to birth control, ban medication abortion, and enact a nationwide abortion ban.
Earlier this year, the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision to recognize frozen embryos as children under the law led to a temporary pause in IVF treatments in the state, underscoring the complexities surrounding reproductive rights. Trump’s pledge to support IVF coverage may be seen as an attempt to soften his stance on abortion, seeking to appeal to voters concerned about his record.
Following Trump’s announcement, a spokesperson for Kamala Harris criticized the former president, arguing that his actions, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, have already jeopardized women’s reproductive freedoms. “Because Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, IVF is already under attack, and women’s freedoms have been ripped away in states across the country,” the spokesperson said.
Trump’s proposed policies on IVF funding and his stance on abortion rights are likely to continue shaping the debate as the election approaches, with reproductive rights standing as a central issue for many voters.
