Aakhir Tak – In Depth
In the ongoing debate over reproductive rights in the US, Donald Trump declared himself the ‘father of IVF’ during a Fox News town hall in Georgia. This claim comes amid legal and political clashes following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, which has intensified discussions about reproductive healthcare. Trump stated, “We really are the party for IVF. We want fertilization, and the Democrats attacked us on it, but we’re ahead on IVF, even more than them.”
However, Trump’s specific plan to support IVF remains unclear, especially in conservative states where legal threats are growing. Vice President Kamala Harris quickly responded on X, saying, “Donald Trump called himself ‘the father of IVF’. What is he talking about? His abortion bans have already jeopardized access to IVF in states across the country.”
A recent ruling by Alabama’s Supreme Court, which recognizes frozen embryos as children, has further endangered IVF. This could lead to doctors refusing to perform the procedure and increased costs. Trump has promised free IVF for all but hasn’t clarified the funding.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats have proposed a bill to protect IVF access, but Republicans have blocked it. Trump also addressed abortion laws, criticizing some as “too tough” but reiterated that decisions on abortion rights should be left to individual states.
