Aakhir Tak – In Depth
US President Donald Trump has declared pardons issued by Joe Biden as null and void. Questioning the legitimacy of the Trump Biden pardons, Trump stated that these pardons were signed using an autopen, and Biden was unaware of them. Trump further suggested that those who helped issue these pardons may have committed a crime.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump denounced the legitimacy of the pardons. He specifically targeted the pardons granted to members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Trump wrote, “The ‘Pardons’ that Sleepy Joe Biden gave to the Unselect Committee of Political Thugs, and many others, are hereby declared VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT, because of the fact that they were done by Autopen. In other words, Joe Biden did not sign them but, more importantly, he did not know anything about them!”
He claimed that Biden had not been properly briefed on the pardons. He stated, “The necessary Pardoning Documents were not explained to, or approved by, Biden. He knew nothing about them, and the people that did may have committed a crime.”
Biden, in his final moments as president, had issued pardons to several individuals. These included his family members – brothers James and Francis Biden, sister Valerie Biden Owens, and their spouses. He defended this decision, saying his family had been subjected to politically motivated attacks.
Biden stated, “My family has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me-the worst kind of partisan politics.”
Beyond his family, Biden also pardoned high-profile figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci and General Mark Milley. Members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack were also granted pardons. These pardons were issued just before Biden left office, interpreted as protecting key figures from possible legal action under the Trump administration.
This move by Biden was met with significant controversy. Critics questioned the justification for such sweeping pardons. However, Biden maintained that issuing these pardons did not imply any wrongdoing by the recipients.
Biden clarified, “The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgement that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offence.”
Additionally, Biden commuted the sentences of approximately 2,500 individuals convicted of non-violent drug offenses. The White House described this as the largest single-day act of clemency in US history.
Biden explained, “Those whose sentences were commuted were serving disproportionately long sentences compared to what they would receive today.” He called it “an important step toward righting historic wrongs, correcting sentencing disparities, and providing deserving individuals the opportunity to return to their families.”
