Aakhir Tak – In Depth
India’s recalled High Commissioner Sanjay Verma stated that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s inner circle includes Khalistani extremists and anti-India elements. He suggested that Trudeau’s government has shielded these extremists for domestic political reasons. Verma, in an exclusive interview, highlighted that during Trudeau’s 2018 visit to India, a Khalistani supporter, Jaspal Atwal, attended official events, signaling Trudeau’s proximity to these groups. India-Canada relations took a severe hit recently when Canada declared Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation into Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder, leading to the expulsion of Canadian diplomats from India.
Verma dismissed Canada’s claim that India did not cooperate in the Nijjar probe, asserting that India has yet to receive any credible evidence. Trudeau has admitted his government only has “intelligence” and lacks “evidentiary proof.” Verma explained that Indian diplomats acted within the Vienna Convention, which defines the roles and protections of consular officers. However, Khalistani extremists posed ongoing security threats, including intimidating Indian diplomats through social media.
