Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Santanu Sen has been removed from his position as the party’s spokesperson after voicing concerns about the management of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The move comes in the wake of Sen’s public criticism of the college’s administration and the state health department following the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor.
Sen, who is also a former MP and a doctor by profession, had openly criticized the principal of RG Kar Medical College, stating that the college’s leadership has been problematic for the past three years. He alleged that certain individuals were not providing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with an accurate picture of the health department’s issues.
The situation escalated when a mob vandalized the hospital on the night of August 14, just days after the trainee doctor’s murder. This act of violence has sparked widespread protests from doctors, medical students, and political parties, who are demanding stricter actions in response to the incident.
In a video message on Friday, Santanu Sen expressed his disappointment at being removed from his spokesperson role, stating that his comments were never against the party but were meant to address issues within the health department. He emphasized his loyalty to the party, saying, “I have always been a devoted soldier of the TMC, and I remain committed to fighting for the truth.”
Sen also criticized the party’s practice of honoring defectors from other parties while sidelining long-time loyalists. He noted, “It feels bad when leaders from other parties join ours and are given respect, while a devoted and true soldier of the party faces this.”
The incident has intensified protests across Kolkata, with many demanding accountability and justice for the murdered trainee doctor. The vandalism at RG Kar Hospital has only added fuel to the fire, with medical professionals and political leaders alike calling for immediate action to restore order and trust in the healthcare system.
