Thane Badlapur Child Assault Case Sparks Protests, Police Take Action

Massive protests have erupted in Thane’s Badlapur after two kindergarten girls, aged three and four, were sexually assaulted by a school sweeper. The incident, which occurred on August 13, led to widespread outrage among the local community, culminating in violent protests and disruptions to train services.

The protests began after one of the victims narrated her ordeal to her parents, prompting them to take action. According to the police, the accused was arrested on August 17 under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the region, has also led to the suspension of three police officials for their alleged failure to act promptly.

In response to the incident, angry locals vandalized the school and blocked trains at Badlapur railway station, demanding strict action against the accused. The protest quickly turned violent, with agitators hurling stones and clashing with the police, who resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Amid the chaos, internet services in Badlapur were suspended to prevent the spread of misinformation and to maintain law and order. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured the public that the accused would face the strictest punishment, including the possibility of capital punishment.

The case has also drawn the attention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which has announced an investigation into the delayed filing of the First Information Report (FIR) and the school’s handling of the incident. The NCPCR has vowed to hold those responsible accountable.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Inspector General of Police Aarti Singh, has been formed to probe the case. The state government has also initiated separate investigations by the education department and the police to ensure justice is served.
