The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in California was desecrated with anti-Hindu messages on Wednesday, marking the second such incident in the US within 10 days. The Sacramento Police have classified the vandalism as a “hate crime.” Police also reported that the accused cut water lines at the temple property.
The BAPS Public Affairs issued a statement saying that their temple in Sacramento had been defaced with a “Hindus Go Back” message. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), they stated, “We stand united against hate with prayers for peace.”
Following the incident, members of the Hindu community gathered at the temple to hold a prayer ceremony promoting harmony. BAPS posted pictures on social media, stating, “Inspired by Mahant Swami Maharaj, we remain dedicated to promoting harmony and standing against intolerance.”
Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera also condemned the incident. He wrote, “There is no place for religious bigotry and hatred in Sacramento County. I strongly condemn this apparent act of vandalism. We must all stand together to ensure that everyone in our community feels safe and respected.”
Earlier this month, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville, New York, was similarly vandalized with hate messages. The Consulate General of India in New York condemned the incident, calling it “unacceptable” and raised the matter with US authorities.
In a statement, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in New York mentioned, “Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Similar desecrations have occurred at various Hindu temples across North America.”
Last year, the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Newark, California, was vandalized with pro-Khalistani slogans, drawing widespread attention. Reacting to the incident, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated that extremists and separatists should not be given any space.
