Swati Maliwal Criticizes Atishi Over Afzal Guru Controversy
Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for appointing Atishi as Delhi’s new Chief Minister. Maliwal alleged that Atishi’s family had previously fought to prevent the execution of convicted terrorist Afzal Guru.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Maliwal expressed her discontent, stating, “Today is a very sad day for Delhi.” She highlighted that Atishi’s parents had signed a mercy petition in 2013, requesting President Pranab Mukherjee to halt Afzal Guru’s hanging.
Afzal Guru was convicted for his role in the 2001 Parliament attack and was executed in 2013. Maliwal linked the issue to national security concerns, commenting, “This issue is related to the security of the country. May God protect Delhi!”
AAP MLA Dilip Pandey responded to Maliwal’s criticism by demanding her resignation from the Rajya Sabha. “Swati Maliwal goes to the Rajya Sabha on AAP’s support but reads the BJP’s script. She should resign if she has any shame or morality left,” Pandey said.
Atishi Appointed as Delhi’s New Chief Minister
On Tuesday, Delhi Minister Atishi was chosen as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, surpassing Kailash Gahlot. This decision came two days after Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation from the position. Atishi’s name was proposed by Kejriwal at the legislature party meeting and was unanimously accepted by AAP MLAs.
Atishi’s political career began with AAP in 2013, and she gained prominence by participating in the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, in 2015. As the only woman minister in the Delhi Cabinet, she manages 14 portfolios, including education, finance, public works department, revenue, and services.
