Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, has expressed relief and welcomed the closure report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s alleged suicide. The lawyer thanked the investigating agency, highlighting the “untold miseries” that Chakraborty endured. The Sushant case CBI closure report marks a significant development.
“The CBI has filed a closure report in connection with the death of Sushant Singh Rajput after almost four and a half years. We are grateful to the CBI for having thoroughly investigated every aspect of the case from all angles and closed the case. The amount of false narrative in social media and electronic media was totally uncalled for. Innocent people were hounded and paraded before the media and investigative authorities. I hope this does not repeat in any case,” Maneshinde stated.
The CBI submitted closure reports in two cases related to Sushant Singh Rajput’s death to a Mumbai court. The reports concluded that there was no evidence to suggest any foul play in his death. The agency had taken over the investigation from the Bihar police, which initially registered a case of abetment to suicide based on a complaint filed by Rajput’s father, KK Singh, in Patna.
Rajput’s father had accused Chakraborty, his son’s rumored girlfriend, and others of abetment to suicide, financial fraud, and mental harassment. Chakraborty filed a counter-complaint in Mumbai, alleging that Rajput’s sisters had obtained a fake medical prescription for him.
After the CBI’s closure report, Rhea’s lawyer emphasized that Chakraborty had spent 27 days in jail and expressed hope that such an ordeal would not be repeated for anyone else.
“Rhea had to undergo untold miseries and was behind bars for 27 days for no fault of hers until Justice Sarang Kotwal of the Bombay High Court released her on bail. Today, I can share that I’m proud to have defended a Fauji family pro bono. This country is still very safe, and every citizen crying for justice has hope due to our vibrant judiciary. Satya Meva Jayate!” Maneshinde said.
Chakraborty, her brother Shouvik Chakraborty, and several others were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a drug-related investigation linked to Rajput’s death.
In its conclusive medico-legal opinion to the CBI, forensic experts at AIIMS had dismissed claims of “poisoning and strangling” that had been widely speculated in the case.
Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found hanging in his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area on June 14, 2020. His father had accused Rhea Chakraborty and her family of misappropriating his son’s money, a claim she denied in multiple television interviews.
