Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The CBI has filed two separate closure reports concerning the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who was found deceased at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. The Sushant case has now seen the CBI file a closure report, marking a significant turn. The CBI investigated aspects of suicide and drug use related to the Sushant case.
One closure report relates to the abetment to suicide case lodged by Rajput’s father, KK Singh, while the other concerns a complaint filed by the actor’s alleged girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, against his sisters.
The closure report in KK Singh’s case was submitted to a special court in Patna, Rajput’s hometown. The findings related to Chakraborty’s complaint were presented before a special court in Mumbai.
Rajput, 34, was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. An initial investigation by the Mumbai Police concluded that he died by suicide. The postmortem report confirmed asphyxia due to hanging. The case garnered significant media attention and public speculation, leading to various conspiracy theories and controversies.
Case Against Rhea Chakraborty
In his complaint filed in Patna, KK Singh accused Rhea Chakraborty of abetting his son’s suicide. He also alleged that Chakraborty and her family misappropriated Rajput’s funds. He claimed that she siphoned off Rs 15 crore from his accounts – an allegation consistently denied by Chakraborty. He also claimed that Chakraborty poisoned his son.
The CBI took over the investigation from the Bihar Police and recorded statements from Chakraborty. Subsequently, Chakraborty, her brother Shouvik, and several others were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a drugs-related probe connected to Rajput’s death. She spent 28 days in jail before being granted bail.
However, after thorough investigation, the CBI found no evidence of foul play or material to substantiate the allegations that anyone drove Rajput to suicide. Based on expert opinions, crime scene analysis, witness statements, and forensic reports, the agency concluded there was no basis to prosecute Chakraborty.
A conclusive medico-legal opinion from AIIMS forensic experts, submitted to the CBI, also ruled out the possibility of poisoning or strangulation.
Counter-FIR by Rhea Chakraborty
In response to the allegations against her, Chakraborty filed a counter-FIR against Sushant Singh Rajput’s sister, Priyanka Singh, and a Delhi-based doctor. She accused them of prescribing medication to Rajput without proper consultation or diagnosis.
Initially registered by the Mumbai Police, this case was later handed over to the CBI. The agency examined the prescription and recorded statements from Priyanka Singh and the doctor. Chakraborty alleged that Rajput died just five days after taking the medications prescribed under questionable circumstances.
However, the CBI found no substantial evidence to support Chakraborty’s claims. Investigators concluded that no foul play was involved in the prescription provided to Rajput.
The courts will now decide whether to accept the closure reports or order further investigation.
“We Are Grateful”: Chakrabortys’ Lawyer
Reacting to this development, Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer expressed gratitude to the CBI. He stated, “We are grateful to the CBI for thoroughly investigating every aspect of the case from all angles and closing the case.”
In his statement, Advocate Satish Maneshinde said that the amount of “false narratives in social media and electronic media was totally uncalled for.”
“Due to the pandemic, everyone was glued to the television and social media in the absence of anything happening in the country. Innocent people were hounded and paraded before the media and investigative authorities,” the statement read.
The lawyer also pointed out that “Rhea Chakraborty had to undergo untold miseries and was behind bars for 27 days” before being released on bail.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Congress launched a scathing attack on the BJP over the CBI’s closure report. They accused the saffron party of exploiting Sushant Singh Rajput’s death for political gains and to malign the then Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Congress alleged that the CBI’s findings have exposed the BJP’s “dirty politics of extracting political mileage from the tragedy”.
State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant tweeted that the BJP had misused the actor’s death to tarnish the image of the MVA government and to gain an advantage in the Bihar elections. Rajput was originally from Patna.
