Aakhir Tak – In Depth
On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected Arvind Kejriwal’s plea that challenged the Gujarat High Court’s ruling regarding his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s education. The defamation case was filed by Gujarat University Registrar Piyush Patel, following comments made by Kejriwal and AAP leader Sanjay Singh.
These remarks were made after the Gujarat High Court overturned a previous Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) order under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which directed the university to disclose Modi’s educational details. The AAP leaders had used sarcastic statements in press conferences and social media about PM Modi’s degrees.
In a similar situation, Sanjay Singh’s plea was earlier dismissed, leading the Supreme Court to maintain a consistent approach in dismissing Kejriwal’s petition. Kejriwal’s counsel argued that the registrar was not directly mentioned in the remarks, but Solicitor General Tushar Mehta contended that Kejriwal often made “defamatory” statements and then apologized later.
The court clarified that it was not ruling on the merits of the case but decided not to interfere in the defamation proceedings.
