The Supreme Court of India on Thursday voiced its strong disapproval of the recent remarks made by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy concerning the judiciary. The criticism followed Reddy’s questioning of the speed with which BRS leader K Kavitha secured bail in the Delhi excise policy case.
Reddy, citing the bail delays faced by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, raised concerns over what he termed as “behind-the-scenes support” for Kavitha by the BJP. “It took 15 months for Manish Sisodia to get bail, and even Arvind Kejriwal is still waiting. Yet, Kavitha managed to secure bail in just five months,” Reddy remarked.
The Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Gavai, expressed its displeasure over these statements, questioning whether the court’s decisions should be influenced by political views. “Do we have to pass our orders in consultation with a political party?” Justice Gavai asked, emphasizing that the judiciary would continue to function according to its conscience, unaffected by external criticism.
Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra, representing Reddy, assured the bench that corrective measures would be taken. However, the bench maintained that while it was not averse to criticism of its judgments, it would remain impartial in its duties.
Justice Viswanathan further highlighted the importance of maintaining mutual respect between institutions, noting that “it is a fundamental duty to keep an arm’s length.”
The court has adjourned the hearing on the 2015 cash-for-vote scam case involving Reddy to September 2, clarifying that it was not ruling out the possibility of transferring the trial outside Telangana. Earlier, the Supreme Court indicated it might appoint a special public prosecutor to handle the case, given concerns about Reddy’s dual role as an accused and the Home Minister.
The case dates back to May 31, 2015, when Revanth Reddy, then a member of the Telugu Desam Party, was allegedly caught offering a Rs 50 lakh bribe to Elvis Stephenson, an MLA, in return for support in legislative council elections.
