Supreme Court Criticizes Police for Kolkata Hospital Vandalism

The Supreme Court has sharply criticized the West Bengal police for their handling of the recent vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital. This incident occurred amidst nationwide protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which had sparked significant unrest.

On August 14, a violent mob attacked RG Kar hospital, where the tragic incident had taken place. The Supreme Court has taken serious note of the police’s alleged inaction and has scheduled a hearing to address the situation.

During the court session, senior advocate Aparajita Singh, representing a doctors’ organization, revealed disturbing details. Singh reported that following the vandalism, the mob returned to the hospital, specifically targeting and threatening female doctors. She described the threats as severe and claimed that the police abandoned their posts, hiding in nurse changing rooms during the attack.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed grave concerns over the police’s conduct. He questioned Kapil Sibal, representing the Bengal government, about the police’s failure to intervene and protect the doctors. Chandrachud remarked, “It doesn’t seem plausible that 7,000 people were involved in the vandalism. How can the police simply flee the scene?”

Sibal explained that although 150 police officers were present, they were outnumbered by approximately 7,000 protesters. He assured the court that steps were being taken to address the situation.

The Supreme Court’s reaction underscores the severity of the situation and the need for accountability in handling such critical incidents.
