The Supreme Court of India has recently put a hold on the divorce granted to celebrity chef Kunal Kapur by the Delhi High Court. This decision has sent ripples through the legal community and media, highlighting the ongoing legal battle between Kapur and his estranged wife.
On Tuesday, a bench consisting of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice to Kunal Kapur following a petition filed by his wife. The Supreme Court has referred the case to the Supreme Court Mediation Centre to explore potential avenues for settlement. This mediation step aims to resolve the issues outside of traditional court proceedings.
In April, the Delhi High Court had granted Kapur a divorce on the grounds of cruelty. The court’s ruling was based on allegations that Kapur’s wife had acted with a lack of dignity and empathy. Kapur, known for his role as a judge on ‘MasterChef India’, claimed that his wife had disrespected his parents, frequently involved the police, and threatened to spread false rumors about him.
Additionally, Kapur alleged that during a 2016 filming of ‘MasterChef India’, his wife disrupted the shoot, creating a scene with their child. His wife, however, countered these claims by accusing Kapur of making false allegations and compromising her career for his sake. She asserted that she faced taunts from her in-laws and that Kapur fabricated stories to secure the divorce.
The Delhi High Court had previously ruled in favor of Kapur, stating that making reckless, defamatory, and humiliating allegations publicly constituted cruelty. The court emphasized that such behavior undermines the very essence of marriage.
As the case moves to mediation, both parties have the opportunity to seek an amicable resolution. This development marks a significant pause in what has been a highly publicized and contentious divorce battle.
