Supreme Court Criticizes Karnataka Judge for Pakistan Comment, Says No Indian Region Can Be Called Pakistan
The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down heavily on Karnataka High Court Judge Justice V Srishananda over his controversial remark made during a hearing. The judge had referred to a Muslim-majority locality in Bengaluru as “Pakistan,” which the apex court declared to be fundamentally against India’s territorial integrity.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud stated that such comments cannot be tolerated and pointed out that the judge had already issued an apology. The court remarked that the live-streaming of court proceedings in today’s digital age puts a greater responsibility on judges, lawyers, and litigants to maintain decorum.
The Chief Justice noted, “While the judge is not a party before us, we intend to close the proceedings. However, it is hoped that the demands placed on institutions in the electronic age will lead to better behavior.”
He further stated, “No one can refer to any part of India as Pakistan. This is fundamentally against national integrity. The solution to transparency is more transparency, not hiding what happens in court.”
