Student suicides in India have reached a critical point, with the latest report revealing a surge that far outpaces both population growth and overall suicide rates. The report, titled “Student Suicides: An Epidemic Sweeping India,” was unveiled at the Annual IC3 Conference and Expo 2024, highlighting a disturbing trend in youth mental health.
Based on data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the report shows that while total suicide rates in India have increased by 2% annually, student suicides have surged by 4%. The report suggests that the real figures could be even higher due to underreporting.
Over the last decade, student suicides have consistently exceeded population growth and overall suicide trends. Despite the population of individuals aged 0-24 decreasing from 582 million to 581 million, the number of student suicides rose sharply from 6,654 to 13,044. This rise represents a critical issue that requires immediate attention and intervention.
A recent UNICEF report titled “The State of the World’s Children” revealed that one in seven young people in India, aged between 15 and 24, experience poor mental health. Alarmingly, only 41% of those surveyed sought support for mental health challenges, showing a significant gap in mental health services and awareness.
The IC3 Institute, which supports schools globally by providing guidance, training, and resources, has taken a proactive stance on this issue. Last year, it formed a dedicated task force to address the mental health crisis among students, implementing strategies such as an annual mental health survey and student-led school plays to reduce stigma.
Key Findings:
- In 2022, 13,044 student suicides were reported, compared to 13,089 in 2021.
- Total suicides, including students and other demographics, increased by 4.2%, from 164,033 in 2021 to 170,924 in 2022.
- Over the last 20 years, total suicides have increased by 2% annually, while student suicides have doubled, increasing by 4%.
- Student suicides account for 7.6% of total suicides, on par with many other professions.
Gender-wise, male student suicides are significantly higher than female, with a 50% increase for males and a 61% increase for females over the last decade. Both male and female suicides have increased by 5% annually over the last five years, indicating a worrying trend.
States with the Highest Student Suicide Rates:
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh have the highest student suicide rates, accounting for one-third of the total count. Uttar Pradesh, with India’s largest population, now features among the top five states, potentially reflecting improved reporting processes.
The data also shows a year-on-year increase in student suicides in Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand by 14% and 15%, respectively. Rajasthan, home to the famous Kota coaching hub, ranks tenth with 571 student suicides.
The situation demands urgent action to safeguard student mental well-being. Efforts must focus on dismantling taboos, enhancing communication, and implementing preventive measures in family and school settings. The IC3 Institute’s initiatives, including awareness programs and educator training, aim to provide critical support in addressing this crisis.
