The Union Cabinet has approved the development of ISRO’s Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), named Soorya. Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this decision marks a significant milestone in India’s space exploration capabilities.
The Soorya launch vehicle is designed to support India’s ambitious space projects, including the establishment of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station) and a crewed lunar mission by 2040. The NGLV offers three times the payload capacity of the current LVM3 rocket, with only a 50% increase in cost.
A key highlight of this vehicle is its reusability, which is expected to substantially reduce the cost of space access. Additionally, it will feature modular green propulsion systems, in line with global sustainability standards. The Soorya vehicle will have a maximum payload capacity of 30 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), meeting India’s needs for human-rated missions and high-payload launches, crucial for future space station operations and lunar missions.
The development project has a total budget of Rs. 8,240 crore ($990 million) and is scheduled to be completed over 96 months (8 years). It includes funding for three developmental flights, the establishment of facilities, and program management.
The Indian space industry is expected to play a significant role in the development and manufacturing of the NGLV, ensuring a smooth transition to operational status post-development. The NGLV is set to enhance India’s space ecosystem, supporting a range of national and commercial missions, including launches for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, lunar and interplanetary exploration, and the deployment of communication and Earth observation satellite constellations.
As India continues to expand its footprint in space exploration, the NGLV project represents a crucial step towards self-reliance in advanced space transportation systems and positions the country as a key player in the global space economy.
