A Strategic Milestone for Development

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel, also known as the Z-Morh Tunnel, on Monday. The 6.5-kilometer tunnel was completed at a cost of ₹2700 crore. It establishes an all-weather link between Srinagar and Sonamarg, ensuring connectivity even during harsh winters.

Transforming Sonamarg into a Tourism Hub

Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah highlighted the tunnel’s potential to position Sonamarg as a prime winter sports destination, similar to Gulmarg. This would not only boost tourism but also open up new employment avenues for the local population, including ski instructors and snowmobile operators.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity and Security

The tunnel, situated at 8650 feet above sea level, bypasses avalanche-prone areas, ensuring safer access to Ladakh. It complements the upcoming Zojila Tunnel, set to complete by 2028, enhancing logistics for trade and defence.

Extensive security measures were implemented for the event, with multiple agencies conducting area sanitization and patrols. The PM was joined by prominent leaders, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Omar Abdullah.
