Sonagachi Sex Workers Deny Durga Idol Soil Claim
Recent protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have stirred significant public outrage. Amidst this unrest, false claims have surfaced online, including one that sex workers from Sonagachi, Kolkata’s notorious red-light district, refused to provide soil for Durga Puja idols.
The rape and murder of the trainee doctor triggered nationwide shock and protests. Public anger, amplified by social media, has been intense, with calls for justice echoing across the country. Amidst these protests, misinformation has spread, including the false claim about Sonagachi sex workers withholding soil for Durga idols as a protest measure.
To clarify, Aaj Tak Bangla interviewed a sex worker from Sonagachi. She stated that the tradition of providing soil from brothels for Durga Puja has not been a recent issue. “For many years, soil has not been provided,” she explained, emphasizing that societal recognition for sex work remains elusive. “Sex workers face constant exploitation and humiliation. We seek respect every day, not just during the festival.”
The tradition of using soil from brothels for making Durga idols has changed over time. The sex worker explained that while it was once a tradition to collect soil directly from brothels, artisans now often source it commercially. “Soil from brothels has become a commercial commodity,” she noted, adding that it’s challenging to verify the authenticity of such soil in the market.
Sonagachi sex workers have actively participated in protests against the rape-murder incident. Despite enduring severe societal stigma, they stand against violence and exploitation. “We participated in the protests on August 14,” the sex worker affirmed, expressing a desire for an end to widespread sexual violence and exploitation faced by women across India.
The claim that Sonagachi sex workers are boycotting soil for Durga idols as a protest is therefore unfounded. The tradition, though historically linked to brothels, has evolved, reflecting broader changes in societal practices and commercialization.
