Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. Describing him as the “leading light of the Left,” Modi highlighted Yechury’s significant contribution to Indian politics and his ability to connect with people across party lines. In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made a mark as an effective Parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
Sitaram Yechury, aged 72, passed away on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after a prolonged illness. President Droupadi Murmu, in a statement, remembered him as a committed ideologue who made friends beyond party lines. She wrote on X, “Saddened to learn about the demise of CPI(M) General Secretary Shri Sitaram Yechury. First as a student leader and then in national politics and as a parliamentarian, he had a distinct and influential voice.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to Yechury as a friend and a protector of the ‘Idea of India’ with a deep understanding of the country. He tweeted, “Sitaram Yechury ji was a friend. I will miss the long discussions we used to have. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed, “My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Comrade Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a humble leader who balanced personal relations with unwavering political ideologies.”
