Sheikh Hasina’s UK Asylum Plan Faces Significant Roadblock
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s plan to seek asylum in the United Kingdom is encountering substantial obstacles. According to recent reports, Hasina is expected to stay in India for the immediate future as her bid for UK asylum faces complications.
Hasina, who has been in India since her dramatic exit from Bangladesh amid violent protests and riots, had hoped to secure asylum in the UK. Her sister, Sheikh Rehana, is a British citizen, which initially seemed to bolster her chances of gaining asylum.
However, the UK’s stringent immigration rules present a significant barrier. The UK Home Office has clear guidelines that state: “The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. However, there is no provision within our Immigration Rules for someone to be allowed to travel to the UK to seek asylum or temporary refuge.” Additionally, the rules emphasize that asylum seekers should claim protection in the first safe country they reach, suggesting that Hasina’s request may not be processed favorably under current regulations.
As of the latest updates, Sheikh Hasina remains in a secure location near the Hindon airbase in India. Her arrival at the airbase was facilitated by the Bangladesh Air Force C-130J aircraft, which has since returned to Dhaka after a 16-hour stay in India. The Indian authorities extended full support to the crew during their visit.
Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has publicly stated that his mother has “done nothing wrong” and highlighted her significant contributions to the country during her tenure. Joy emphasized that Hasina plans to focus on spending time with her family in the near future.
The situation remains fluid, and it is unclear how long Hasina will remain in India or what her next steps will be in the asylum process.
