Sheikh Hasina’s Son Refutes False Resignation Statement
Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has categorically denied claims that his mother made a resignation statement accusing the United States of plotting a regime change in Bangladesh. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Wazed described these reports as “completely false and fabricated.”
According to Wazed, Sheikh Hasina did not make any such statements before or after her departure from Dhaka. This denial comes in response to earlier reports suggesting that Hasina intended to address the nation before her resignation and escape from the country on August 5, amid violent student protests.
The disputed report claimed that Sheikh Hasina alleged she could have retained power by ceding Saint Martin Island and the Bay of Bengal to America. However, Wazed has refuted these claims, emphasizing that his mother never made such statements.
Background of the Disputed Statement
The initial reports suggested that Sheikh Hasina, in an undelivered speech, mentioned that her resignation was aimed at preventing further loss of lives and destruction. The reports also included claims that Hasina had criticized the United States and referred to possible regime change conspiracies.
In addition to addressing these claims, Sheikh Hasina clarified her remarks regarding the term “Razakar,” which had caused significant controversy. She stated that she never referred to the protesting students as Razakars, a term considered derogatory in Bangladesh due to its association with supporters of the Pakistani military during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
Tensions with the US and Domestic Unrest
Sheikh Hasina’s tenure saw strained relations with the United States, particularly after allegations that the January elections were neither free nor fair. In the months leading up to her departure, Hasina had claimed that there were conspiracies to topple her government and criticized alleged foreign plots to alter Bangladesh’s geopolitical landscape.
Following her resignation, violence erupted in Bangladesh, leading to over 230 deaths and widespread attacks on minorities. The resignation of Hasina and the subsequent unrest have prompted Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus to assume leadership of the caretaker government, tasked with overseeing new elections in the country.
Sajeeb Wazed’s denial of the false resignation statement underscores ongoing tensions and misinformation surrounding Sheikh Hasina’s departure from office. The situation remains fluid as Bangladesh navigates its political crisis and prepares for future elections under Yunus’s interim leadership.
