Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has issued her first public statement since leaving the country. In a powerful declaration made through her son, Sajeeb Wazed, Hasina condemned the coup that forced her out of office as a severe affront to her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the countless martyrs who fought for Bangladesh’s independence.
Hasina expressed deep sorrow over the insult to her father, who is revered as the founding President of Bangladesh. “The Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership we gained self-esteem as an independent nation, has been grossly insulted,” she stated.
Hasina also addressed the ongoing violence and loss of life in Bangladesh, calling for justice. “They insulted the blood of millions of martyrs. I want justice from the countrymen,” she added, urging for a thorough investigation into the killings and vandalism sweeping the country.
In her statement, Hasina urged the people of Bangladesh to observe National Mourning Day on August 15, in remembrance of her father’s assassination. She requested citizens to honor the day with due dignity and solemnity, offering prayers and floral tributes at Bangabandhu Bhavan.
Expressing her condolences to those affected by the violence, Hasina said, “Students, teachers, policemen, journalists, cultural workers, and innocent bystanders have lost their lives due to terrorism and violence. I offer my deepest condolences to those who, like me, are living with the pain of losing loved ones.”
Hasina demanded strict action against those responsible for the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh. “I demand that those involved in these killings and vandalism be properly investigated and the culprits be identified and punished accordingly,” she concluded.
Sheikh Hasina’s resignation on August 5 marked the end of her 15-year tenure as Prime Minister. The decision followed escalating violent protests against her government, leading to her departure to a secure location in India.
