Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has been sentenced to 15 days of simple imprisonment by a Mumbai court in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, the wife of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. Medha, who is an Organic Chemistry professor at Ruia College in Mumbai, alleged that Raut made baseless and defamatory claims against her and her husband.
The case revolved around Raut’s allegations that Medha and her NGO, Yuva Pratishthan, were involved in a Rs 100 crore toilet scam. These allegations were strongly denied by Medha, leading her to seek legal action.
The Mumbai court convicted Raut under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, sentencing him to 15 days of simple imprisonment. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Raut.
Medha’s complaint, filed through advocate Vivekanand Gupta, detailed that since April 2022, Raut had been making “malicious and unwarranted statements” against her to the media. These statements were widely published, broadcast, and shared on social media platforms, causing reputational damage.
Raut’s lawyer and brother, Sunil Raut, stated that they have filed for bail and plan to appeal the court’s decision in the Mumbai Sessions court.
