Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, spent a sleepless night in CBI custody after his arrest for alleged financial misconduct. Ghosh, who was confined to the 14th floor of Kolkata’s Nizam Palace in the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch lockup, struggled to adjust to the harsh conditions. Sources reported that he requested a vegetarian meal, citing his observance of Kali Puja, which was granted.
Ghosh, who appeared nervous and tense, was kept under tight security with armed CRPF personnel guarding his lockup. During his first night in custody, he remained restless, unable to sleep, reflecting his unfamiliarity with such circumstances. On Wednesday, he was served tea, biscuits, and breakfast before the CBI resumed its interrogation.
The investigation, led by three officers from the Anti-Corruption Branch, focused on alleged financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure as principal from February 2021 to September 2023. Despite the allegations, Ghosh has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He was escorted to court under heavy security on Tuesday, where an agitated mob attempted to attack him, underscoring the tense atmosphere surrounding the case.
