A devastating Russian missile strike on Lviv’s historic center has claimed the lives of seven people, including three children. The attack, which took place early Wednesday, follows a series of intensified Russian aerial assaults in response to Ukraine’s recent offensive in Russia’s Kursk region. This offensive had reportedly caught Russian troops off guard, leading to increased retaliatory strikes.
According to Internal Affairs Minister Igor Klymenko, search and rescue operations are still ongoing. The attack has wounded 40 people and caused significant damage to schools, medical facilities, and buildings in Lviv’s historic center. Lviv, located near the Polish border, had largely been spared from such violence during the past two and a half years of conflict.
Mayor Andriy Sadovy reported that air raid sirens sounded before dawn, urging residents to seek shelter. The missile barrage resulted in extensive damage and a chilling account from residents, including Yelyzaveta, who described hearing “inhuman screams” and rushed to a basement for safety. Another resident, Anastasia Grynko, narrowly escaped injury as the rocket hit her house.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as “Russian terrorist strikes” and called for increased air defense and long-range weaponry from Western allies. The Ukrainian air force reported downing seven missiles and 22 drones as part of a broader assault involving 13 missiles and 29 drones.
In addition to the Lviv attack, the city of Kryvyi Rig also suffered from a missile strike, which damaged the Arena hotel and wounded five people. Ukrainian officials have condemned these attacks on civilian infrastructure and are urging Western partners to lift restrictions on long-range weapons to enable a more effective response against Russian targets.
The strike on Lviv follows one of the deadliest attacks of the conflict, which occurred in Poltava, where 53 people were killed and 271 injured. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal emphasized that the “enemy will pay for what it has done,” while also advocating for more robust air defense measures.
