RG Kar Hospital Principal Sacked Amid Student Protests in Kolkata

In a swift move, the West Bengal government has sacked Dr. Suhrita Paul, the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, just ten days after her appointment. The decision came after intense student protests demanding the removal of all administrators on duty during the vandalism incident at the hospital on August 15.

Dr. Paul was appointed on August 12, following the resignation of former dean Dr. Sandip Ghosh. The resignation came in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9. The incident sparked widespread outrage, particularly within the medical fraternity, and led to protests across the state.

In addition to Dr. Paul, the hospital’s superintendent and the head of the Chest Department were also removed from their positions. The protests intensified after students and resident doctors marched towards West Bengal Swasthya Bhawan, demanding the removal of all administrative staff present during the vandalism.

The vandalism occurred days after the trainee doctor’s death, where a mob attacked the hospital, leading to significant damage. The emergency ward and police vehicles were also targeted, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The state government has now appointed Dr. Manas Bandopadhyay, previously the principal of Barasat Medical College and Hospital, as the new principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The medical community continues to demand justice for the trainee doctor, and the situation remains tense as authorities try to manage the fallout from these tragic events.
