The tragic murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has stirred massive protests and safety concerns among healthcare professionals nationwide. The 31-year-old doctor was raped and killed inside the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. Following the incident, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, issued an urgent order for the repair and renovation of on-duty doctors’ rooms across various departments of the hospital.
India Today accessed a letter written by Ghosh on August 10, addressing the Public Works Department (PWD). In the letter, Ghosh emphasized the need for renovation, citing the lack of sufficient on-duty doctors’ rooms and attached toilets in RG Kar Hospital. The letter stated, “You are hereby requested to do the needful immediately as per the demand of resident doctors of RG Kar Hospital.”
Ghosh, who resigned amid public outrage, has also been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. The incident sparked a national outcry among doctors, who have raised serious concerns about safety at their workplaces.
Renovation Controversy
The renovation order came under scrutiny when allegations surfaced that the construction was taking place near the crime scene. Videos showing construction work at the hospital went viral, leading to public suspicion that evidence might be tampered with. However, hospital authorities clarified that the video was of a different room, not the seminar hall where the crime occurred. The ongoing construction was halted following the backlash.
High Court’s Intervention
The Calcutta High Court also questioned the state government’s urgency in ordering the renovations near the crime scene. Chief Justice pointedly asked why the PWD prioritized restroom renovations, especially when similar facilities in district courts were neglected. The court expressed concern that the construction might be an attempt to destroy evidence related to the crime.
The state government’s counsel refuted these allegations, stating that the demolition and renovation work did not take place near the crime site. “The demolition work that happened was not near the place of occurrence,” the counsel asserted, seeking to alleviate concerns that evidence was being compromised.
Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures
As investigations continue, the tragic death of the young doctor has highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures in hospitals across the country. The Union Health Ministry has urged state governments to provide action-taken reports on the security enhancements implemented in medical institutions. Meanwhile, protests demanding justice for the victim and increased security for healthcare workers continue to gain momentum nationwide.
