Over 45 Senior Doctors Resign from RG Kar in Support of Juniors’ Protest
Over 45 senior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have resigned, expressing solidarity with their junior colleagues protesting against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in August this year. This incident occurred within the hospital premises, sparking outrage within the medical community.
In their resignation, the senior doctors stated that their junior colleagues’ demands remained unmet and that there had been “no development” in the investigation related to the case. They urged the administration of RG Kar Hospital to “reconcile” with the protesting doctors, who are on a ‘fast-unto-death’ demanding justice for the trainee doctor.
“The health of the protesting doctors is deteriorating. We request the government to engage with the protesting doctors and those on hunger strike,” the senior doctors said in their letter to the hospital’s administration. They also indicated that they would consider individual resignations if the situation warranted.
Meanwhile, another doctors’ organization, the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), issued a statement supporting their junior colleagues. Doctors Punyabrata Gun and Hiralal Konar stated, “Many faculty members and senior doctors in government service expressed their desire to submit mass resignations due to the ongoing movement ‘Justice for Abhaya.'”
Junior doctors continued their ‘fast-unto-death’ for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday amid Durga Puja festivities, demanding justice for the RG Kar rape-murder victim, while around 15 senior doctors joined them in solidarity by staging a symbolic hunger strike.
