Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has publicly apologized for his remarks concerning the bail granted to BRS leader K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case. The apology came after the Supreme Court’s strong reprimand for Reddy’s allegations of a ‘deal’ between the BJP and the BRS that supposedly influenced Kavitha’s bail decision.
Reddy posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressing his respect and trust in the Indian judiciary. He clarified that his earlier comments, as reported in the media on August 29, 2024, were misinterpreted, suggesting that he was questioning the court’s decision. Revanth Reddy stated, “I have the highest regard and full faith in the judiciary. I unconditionally express my regret for the statements reflected in the press reports.”
The Congress leader emphasized that his statements were taken out of context, and he reiterated his unwavering respect for the judicial system. He acknowledged that his words could be misconstrued as disrespect towards the judiciary, and he did not intend to undermine the court’s independence.
The controversy began when the Supreme Court granted bail to K Kavitha on August 27, 2024, in the Delhi excise policy scam case. The court highlighted that prolonged detention without a verdict should not serve as a punishment before a trial. Following this verdict, Reddy remarked on a supposed alliance between BRS and BJP during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, insinuating a ‘deal’ that led to Kavitha’s bail.
The Supreme Court reacted sharply to these comments, asserting that such statements could foster public distrust in the judiciary. Justice B R Gavai, leading the three-judge bench, questioned the appropriateness of a chief minister making such claims, noting that such remarks could create unwarranted doubts in the public mind. The court firmly stated, “We do not pass orders after consultations with political parties.”
The bench further condemned dragging the judiciary into political rivalries and reminded that it is a fundamental duty of political leaders to respect constitutional institutions. Revanth Reddy’s apology aims to mend the situation and reaffirm his respect for judicial processes.
