On a tragic Saturday afternoon, a retired Punjab Police officer, Malwinder Singh, fatally shot his son-in-law, Harpreet Singh, inside the Chandigarh district court. This shocking incident occurred during a court hearing related to a family dispute.

The confrontation unfolded at approximately 2 pm at the Chandigarh district court, where Harpreet Singh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was present for a mediation meeting concerning ongoing divorce proceedings. Singh had been serving as the Controller of Accounts at the Ministry of Agriculture in New Delhi.
According to Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, the mediation session was the fourth meeting between the two families since the proceedings began in 2023. Harpreet Singh attended with his parents, while Malwinder Singh, the father of Singh’s estranged wife, represented the opposing side.
The Shooting
During the meeting, Malwinder Singh, a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police, produced a firearm and opened fire on Harpreet Singh near the mediation centre. The IRS officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
Police Response and Charges
The police swiftly detained Malwinder Singh following the shooting. They recovered a pistol, four spent cartridges, and three unused bullets from the crime scene. Singh has been charged with murder and multiple violations under the Arms Act. An ongoing investigation aims to uncover further details surrounding the tragic incident.
