State Funeral for Ratan Tata, Amit Shah to Attend, Maharashtra Declares Day of Mourning
Following the death of legendary industrialist and Tata Sons’ former chairman, Ratan Tata, the Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on Thursday to honor him. The 86-year-old business icon passed away on Wednesday, and the state will give him a state funeral as a mark of respect. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described Tata as a “unique blend of morality and entrepreneurship” and announced a mourning day across the state in tribute.
Ratan Tata’s mortal remains will be placed for public viewing at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point, South Mumbai, from 10:30 am to 4 pm on Thursday. At 3:30 pm, his body will be taken to Worli crematorium for the last rites. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the central government at Ratan Tata’s funeral.
In a statement, Tata’s family said, “Ratan Tata’s mortal remains will be kept at the NCPA Lawns, Nariman Point, Mumbai, from 10:30 am on Thursday for the public to pay their last respects.”
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced that the tricolour flag on all government offices across Maharashtra would fly at half-mast as a sign of mourning. In addition, all entertainment events will be suspended.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Eknath Shinde called Tata a “living legend” who led the Tata Group to new heights through his steadfast leadership. Shinde praised Tata’s decisiveness and mental toughness, which helped the 150-year-old Tata Group reach unprecedented industrial growth.
Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar added that all government programs scheduled for Thursday have been canceled. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Ratan Tata as a visionary leader and a compassionate soul. Modi stated that Tata was passionate about dreaming big and giving back to society.

“Ratan Tata Ji was not only a visionary business leader but also a compassionate and humble human being. He led one of India’s most prestigious business houses with humility and a deep commitment to societal improvement,” said the Prime Minister.
