Ratan Tata, one of India’s most iconic industrialists, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. His passing marks the end of an era for the Tata Group, which he led to global prominence during his tenure as chairman. Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata was part of one of India’s most well-known business families, with a legacy tracing back to Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Tata family.
The Tata family’s legacy begins in the 19th century with Nusserwanji Tata (1822–1886), who laid the foundation for what would become one of India’s largest and most influential business dynasties. Nusserwanji married Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata, and their son Jamsetji Tata (1839–1904) would go on to establish the Tata Group. Often called the “Father of Indian Industry,” Jamsetji Tata’s vision helped shape India’s steel and power industries and contributed significantly to the country’s industrial growth.
Jamsetji and his wife, Hirabai Daboo, had three children: Sir Dorabji Tata, Dhunbai Tata, and Sir Ratan Tata. Sir Dorabji Tata (1859–1932) continued his father’s legacy, playing a major role in the growth of the Tata Group. He was knighted in 1910 for his services to India’s industrial sector. Sir Ratan Tata (1871–1918), Jamsetji’s younger son, was also deeply involved in the family business and philanthropy. He and his wife, Navajbai Sett, did not have children. After Sir Ratan’s death, Navajbai adopted Naval H. Tata (1904–1989).
Naval Tata had two sons, Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata, with his first wife, Soonoo Commisariat. Later, Naval married Simone Dunoyer, and they had a son, Noel Tata.
Ratan Tata devoted his life to the Tata Group, becoming its chairman in 1991 and overseeing its expansion into a global business powerhouse. Jimmy Tata, Ratan’s younger brother, largely stayed out of the public eye, while their half-brother, Noel Tata, now holds prominent positions within the group. Noel is Chairman of Tata Investment Corporation and Managing Director of Tata International.
Noel Tata is married to Aloo Mistry, daughter of industrialist Pallonji Mistry. They have three children: Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata, who are actively involved in the family business, continuing the Tata legacy into the next generation.
