Kannada actress Ranya Rao’s stepfather, Ramchandra Rao, a DGP-rank officer in Karnataka, has been questioned in connection with the gold smuggling case involving his daughter. Ranya Rao is in trouble due to the gold smuggling case.

Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru Airport on March 3 after being caught with 14.2 kilograms of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore while returning from Dubai. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, which is investigating the case, informed the special court on Friday that the probe had so far uncovered a “sophisticated methodology” for gold smuggling. According to officials, the operation involved using the State Police Protocol Officer to bypass security checks, engaging in hawala transactions to transfer funds from India to Dubai for purchasing gold, and links to a larger syndicate. This gold smuggling case is serious.

Ramachandra Rao earlier distanced himself from his daughter’s arrest, calling himself a “heartbroken parent” and claiming he was unaware of her alleged smuggling activities. However, a constable at Kempegowda Airport Police Station, who was also serving as a protocol officer, told investigators he was acting on Rao’s direct orders to ensure Ranya Rao’s smooth arrival and departure. The allegations against Ramachandra Rao are serious.

Rao has faced multiple controversies in his career, including a 2014 hawala scandal where he was accused of seizing and misappropriating Rs 2.07 crore, leading to his removal as Inspector General of Police, Mysore range.
