Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted protection from arrest to YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia in connection with multiple FIRs registered against him over crass jokes he made on comedian Samay Raina’s ‘India’s Got Latent’ show. Despite granting him relief, the top court roasted Allahbadia, for “vomiting dirt in his mind” and restrained him from doing any other shows for the time being. This Ranveer Allahbadia case has drawn significant attention.
Court’s Remarks and Observations
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh, hearing the plea of Allahbadia, popularly known as ‘BeerBiceps’ to club the FIRs filed in Mumbai, Guwahati and Jaipur, said such behaviour had to be condemned despite being popular. It said that Allahbadia’s obscene remarks showed his “pervert” mind that made the entire society feel ashamed. This was a strong condemnation of Ranveer Allahbadia‘s actions.
Court Orders and Directives
The Supreme Court also issued notice to the Centre and the governments of Maharashtra and Assam. It also said that Allahbadia could approach the police in Maharashtra and Assam to seek protection for him and his family in case of any threats.
FIRs and Investigation
The court also said that no FIRs would be filed against him on the same set of allegations and asked Allahbadia to join the probe and not leave the country without permission.
‘Vomited Dirt’
The Supreme Court pulled up Ranveer Allahbadia while hearing his plea over FIRs filed against him in connection with the row over an obscene joke on India Got Latent show. Justice Kant further said, “Such behaviour has to be condemned. Just because you are popular, you cannot take society for granted. Is there anyone on earth who will like this language? There is something very dirty in his mind which has been vomited. Why should we protect him?”
Obscene Joke
He added, “The words you have chosen, parents will feel ashamed. Daughters and sisters will feel ashamed. The entire society will be ashamed. These are the levels of depravity you and your henchmen has gone. The rule of law and system has to be followed.”
Relief with Restraint
The Supreme Court, while granting relief to him against arrest, also ordered that he and his associates cannot do “any other show for the time being.” The court also said that no FIR shall be registered against Allahbadia on the basis of the India’s Got Latent show and allowed him to approach local police of Maharashtra and Assam for protection in case of any threat impeding him to join probe. Further, he has been asked to deposit his passport with the Thane police and he “cannot leave the country without permission” of the Supreme Court. This ruling significantly impacts Ranveer Allahbadia‘s career.
Controversy and Apology
A massive controversy erupted over Allahbadia’s remarks on “parents and sex” on ‘India’s Got Latent’. The show has since been removed from YouTube and Allahbadia issued an apology, saying the remark was “not just inappropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m just here to say sorry.” Ranveer Allahbadia was forced to apologize for his remarks.
FIR Status
At least three FIRs have been filed against Allahbadia so far – one in Assam, another in Mumbai and a fresh FIR was filed against him in Jaipur on Monday. Mumbai and Guwahati Police said that the popular influencer is “continuously out of contact”.
