Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the Sikh community have sparked a strong reaction. On Wednesday, a BJP-backed Sikh group protested outside his residence in Delhi, expressing anger over his statements on the Sikh community in India. The protesters attempted to breach police barricades at Janpath Road.
Rahul Gandhi, who is on a four-day visit to the US, had addressed a gathering of Indian Americans in Herndon, a Virginia suburb of Washington DC, on Monday. During his speech, Gandhi highlighted issues of religious freedom, saying, “The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or a kada in India. Or he, as a Sikh, is going to be able to go to gurdwara. That’s what the fight is about. And not just for him, for all religions.”
The statement drew sharp criticism from the BJP, who accused Gandhi of trying to create a “dangerous narrative” by speaking on “sensitive issues” abroad.
Today, the BJP-backed Sikh group staged a protest outside his residence in Delhi. The protesters held placards reading, “Why does Rahul Gandhi defame Sikhs after going abroad? Shame on you, shame on you.”
