Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA alliance have achieved a significant victory in their ongoing struggle for social justice by compelling the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to cancel an advertisement promoting lateral entry hiring for government jobs. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge attributed this success to the persistent efforts of the INDIA bloc, emphasizing that the BJP’s plans to undermine reservations have been thwarted.
The controversial advertisement, which sought to fill 45 high-level positions through lateral entry, faced intense criticism from the Congress and its allies. They argued that such a move would compromise the reservation system meant to protect the rights of Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis. Rahul Gandhi, a vocal critic of the lateral entry provision, labeled it an “anti-national step” and reaffirmed his commitment to defending the Constitution and the reservation system against any conspiracies.
In response to the backlash, Union Minister Jitendra Singh instructed the UPSC Chairperson to withdraw the advertisement, citing the need to align with constitutional principles of equity and social justice. The government’s retreat on this issue is seen as a direct result of the pressure exerted by the Opposition, particularly the Congress and the INDIA bloc.
This victory is part of a broader pattern where the government has reconsidered its decisions in the face of Opposition protests. Recent instances include the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the proposed Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, both of which were met with strong resistance from various political parties.
The Congress has vowed to remain vigilant against any future attempts by the BJP-RSS to undermine the reservation system. Rahul Gandhi has reiterated his commitment to ensuring social justice through measures like breaking the 50% reservation limit based on caste count.
