Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a jibe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, stating that the NDA government has made Jammu and Kashmir so safe that Rahul Baba can now enjoy ice cream and ride a bike there. While addressing an election rally in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said, “We have made Kashmir safe. Today, Rahul Baba rides a bike in Kashmir and eats ice cream at Lal Chowk while abusing Modi ji. But this was not possible during your government. Modi ji has buried terrorism to the roots.”
Shah’s remarks referred to a video showing Rahul Gandhi enjoying an ice cream in Lal Chowk, Srinagar, during his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi was also seen riding a bike in Ladakh during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Amit Shah further took a dig at senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde, suggesting that he could now walk freely in Lal Chowk without fear.
“Sushil Kumar Shinde, who was the Home Minister during the Congress government, recently admitted that he was scared to visit Lal Chowk. Shinde Sahab, now you can walk there with your children. No one will dare harm you,” Shah commented during the rally.
Shah’s remarks were a response to Shinde’s recent statement where he confessed to feeling fearful while venturing out in Kashmir, even as the Home Minister during the Congress-led UPA government.
Shinde had said, “Before becoming Home Minister, I sought advice from educationist Vijay Dhar, who encouraged me to visit Lal Chowk and interact with people. That advice earned me publicity as a fearless Home Minister, but who would know that I was actually scared?”
The BJP-led NDA government credits the abrogation of Article 370 for the reduction in militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Congress and National Conference, who are contesting the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir together, argue that the abrogation was a betrayal to the people and have vowed to restore Article 370 if elected.
