The Maharashtra government officially approved the renaming of Pune Airport to ‘Tukaram Maharaj Airport’ on Monday. This decision pays tribute to the revered 17th-century saint, Sant Tukaram Maharaj, a prominent spiritual figure in Maharashtra’s history known for his devotional poetry and influence on the Bhakti movement.
Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had previously recommended renaming Pune Airport and stated that he would seek approval from the central government. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced on X that the first step towards renaming the international airport to ‘Jagadguru Santshrestha Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport’ has been taken today.
The proposal has been approved by the state government and will now be sent to the central government and cabinet, which will make the final decision on renaming the airport.
