PM Modi Sets New Record with 98-Minute Independence Day Speech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his longest-ever Independence Day speech at 98 minutes on Thursday, surpassing his previous record of 96 minutes set in 2016. This latest address, delivered from the historic Red Fort, marks a new milestone in Modi’s tenure, reflecting his commitment to detailed communication with the nation.
Modi’s Independence Day speeches have consistently been among the longest in Indian history, with an average duration of 82 minutes—significantly longer than those of any other Prime Minister. His speech on this 78th Independence Day was not only notable for its length but also for the depth and breadth of topics covered.
Longest Speeches in Indian History
Prior to this, Modi’s longest speech was in 2016, where he spoke for 96 minutes. His shortest Independence Day speech occurred in 2017, clocking in at around 56 minutes. Over the years, his speeches have gradually increased in length, with his first in 2014 lasting 65 minutes. By 2015, his speech extended to 88 minutes, setting a pattern for longer addresses.
In 2018, Modi addressed the nation for 83 minutes, followed by a 92-minute speech in 2019, which at the time was his second-longest. The trend continued in 2020 with a 90-minute speech. In 2021, he spoke for 88 minutes, while his 2022 address lasted 74 minutes.
This 98-minute speech not only surpasses his previous records but also highlights Modi’s approach to addressing the nation with detailed analysis and a comprehensive outlook on national issues.
A Historical Perspective on Independence Day Speeches
Before Modi, the longest Independence Day speeches were delivered by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947 and IK Gujral in 1997, which lasted for 72 and 71 minutes, respectively. Interestingly, Nehru also holds the record for the shortest speech, which was just 14 minutes in 1954, a record matched by Indira Gandhi in 1966.
Comparatively, other Prime Ministers such as Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee delivered much shorter addresses. Singh’s speeches in 2012 and 2013 were just 32 and 35 minutes, respectively. Vajpayee’s speeches were even briefer, lasting 25 and 30 minutes in 2002 and 2003.
Modi’s latest address, thus, not only sets a new record but also showcases his distinctive style of leadership—one that emphasizes detailed communication and a thorough review of the nation’s progress and challenges.
This 11th Independence Day speech marks Modi’s first address after assuming office for a third term, solidifying his position as one of India’s most communicative Prime Ministers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s record-breaking 98-minute Independence Day speech is a reflection of his comprehensive approach to governance and his dedication to keeping the nation informed about the government’s initiatives and future plans. As India moves forward, Modi’s speeches continue to serve as a pivotal platform for sharing the government’s vision with the people.
