Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for quicker verdicts in cases involving crimes against women, particularly in light of the recent Kolkata rape-murder case. He stressed that swift legal action is crucial to ensuring women’s safety and restoring societal confidence.
During a speech commemorating 75 years of the Supreme Court, PM Modi highlighted that atrocities against women and child safety are critical concerns. He pointed out that although numerous laws exist to protect women, such as the fast-track courts established in 2019, there is a pressing need to enhance these measures for quicker judicial decisions.
PM Modi stated, “The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get.” He urged district monitoring committees to strengthen their roles and called for the creation of additional witness deposition centers to support this objective.
His remarks followed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s letter, urging stricter legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes. In response, the central government asserted that current laws are sufficient if implemented effectively by state governments.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, also emphasized the importance of adherence to existing laws to ensure justice for victims and deterrence for perpetrators.
PM Modi reiterated the government’s ongoing efforts over the past decade to reduce delays in the judicial process and improve court infrastructure, underscoring his commitment to women’s safety.
