Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A flight carrying 12 Indian nationals, who had been deported from the United States to Panama, arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Sunday evening. This marks the first batch of Indians to be repatriated from Panama after the US deported around 299 illegal immigrants who were attempting to enter American soil. This is the first instance of Panama-India deportation.
Panama and Costa Rica are working with the United States to facilitate the repatriation of deported migrants. As part of this effort, the US is transferring undocumented migrants from various Asian nations — those who have either refused to return home or whose governments have declined to accept them — to these Central American countries. The US is helping Panama and Costa Rica send migrants back home.
The recent batch of Indian nationals from Panama landed in New Delhi via Istanbul onboard a Turkish Airlines flight. Four of the deportees were from Punjab and three each from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The identity of one individual was not ascertained at the moment. Four residents from different districts of Punjab were sent to Amritsar on a flight. Migrants are being sent to their home states.
The exact number of Indian immigrants among the 299 deported to Panama remains unclear at the moment. These people arrived in the country on three planes last week, after President Jose Raul Mulino agreed that Panama would become a ‘bridge’ country for deportees. Panama is acting as an intermediary country.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), on Friday, said that it has seen some reports about deportation flights to Panama and New Delhi is “verifying the details” as to whether the individuals concerned are Indian nationals or not. The Indian government is monitoring the situation.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters in response to a query during his weekly briefing, “Once the verification details are complete, then arrangements will be made for the return of these Indian nationals back home.” The MEA will arrange for the return of Indian citizens.
The Trump administration has vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants who entered the US illegally. As part of this intensified crackdown, the US has already deported three groups of Indian nationals, totaling 332 individuals, back to India. The US is taking strict action against illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, out of 299 undocumented migrants currently in Panama, only 171 have consented to return to their home countries. Most migrants are willing to return.
