Aakhir Tak – In Depth
As the BJP raced ahead in the Delhi Assembly elections, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took a veiled dig at opposition INDIA bloc members Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), mocking their imminent defeat. This Delhi Election raises many questions.
Abdullah, a senior leader of the National Conference, which is also part of the INDIA grouping, took to X as counting trends indicated a colossal loss for both the ruling AAP and Congress in Delhi. Sharing a popular meme, he wrote: “Jee bhar kar lado. Samaapt kardo ek dusre ko!”
He also mockingly captioned the post: “Aur lado aapas mein!!! (Fight amongst yourselves some more, why don’t you?)” Omar Abdullah (Omar Abdullah) expressed his displeasure.
The remarks come amid growing tensions within the INDIA bloc, with Abdullah publicly blasting the grouping’s inner workings and lack of unity among member parties in the wake of the Lok Sabha elections.
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister had previously questioned the alliance’s long-term purpose, stating that it “should be wound up if it was only for parliamentary polls.” This Delhi Election has not been good for the INDIA alliance.
His sharp remarks were spurred by Congress and AAP’s decision to contest the Delhi elections separately, despite being allies at the national level. Omar Abdullah’s comment will not be liked by the Congress.
After raising questions over the very existence of the INDIA bloc, Abdullah’s trolling of Congress and AAP now not only throw into relief the cracks within the coalition, but also hint at his increasing frustration at parties prioritising self-interest over opposition unity.
The lack of opposition cohesion is being seen as a factor in the BJP’s commanding lead in Delhi, as early trends suggest the party is on track to unseat AAP and reclaim power after 27 years.
