Odisha’s Bhadrak has witnessed a 48-hour internet shutdown due to communal clashes that erupted over a controversial social media post. The violent protest resulted in injuries to five policemen.
The unrest began after a Facebook post shared by an individual triggered widespread resentment in the region. In response, protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and demanded the arrest of the person responsible. When police intervened, tensions escalated, leading to stone-throwing and clashes between two groups.
As the situation deteriorated, police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Five police officers, including the Bhadrak DSP and a sub-inspector, sustained injuries during the confrontations.
The vehicle of the Bhadrak tehsildar also sustained significant damage amid the chaos. In the aftermath of the clashes, prohibitory orders were issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
“One person has been detained for allegedly assaulting police personnel. A boy shared a video on Facebook that led to tensions in Bhadrak. Following that, some people protested and demanded the arrest of the individual. He deleted the post after receiving complaints,” said a police inspector.
“Protesters closed the road and were prepared to clash with the public. Four to five police personnel were injured in this incident. The administration imposed Section 163 of BNSS and police began a flag march in the locality,” the official added.
Under Section 163 of BNSS, the government has the authority to issue orders in urgent cases of nuisance or anticipated danger.
