The recent readout from the United States regarding the phone call between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked considerable speculation. The absence of any mention of the ongoing Bangladesh crisis in the White House’s statement has led to further conjecture about the current state of US-Bangladesh relations, especially in the aftermath of the political upheaval in Dhaka.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussion between Modi and Biden did cover concerns about Bangladesh, particularly emphasizing the restoration of law and order and the safety of minorities, especially Hindus. However, the White House’s summary of the conversation was conspicuously silent on this matter, focusing instead on the Ukraine-Russia conflict and Modi’s recent visits to Poland and Ukraine.
This omission has not gone unnoticed, especially given the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, where student protests over a controversial government job quota system escalated into violence, resulting in over 500 deaths and the eventual collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. The crisis has drawn limited attention from the US, which has maintained a relatively low profile regarding the situation in Dhaka.
Amid the unrest, there were allegations that the US may have played a role in influencing the outcome, accusations that the White House has strongly denied. The relationship between Sheikh Hasina’s government and the US has been fraught with tension in recent years, further complicating the situation.
Adding to the intrigue are reports from Bangladeshi media, which surfaced an undelivered speech by Hasina in which she purportedly accused the US of pressuring her to allow the establishment of a naval base on St Martin’s Island. Hasina suggested that had she ceded control of this strategically important island in the Bay of Bengal to the US, her government might have survived. However, these claims were later denied by her son, Sajeeb Wazed.
The strategic significance of St Martin’s Island, particularly its potential to serve as a counterbalance to Chinese influence in the region, underscores the broader geopolitical implications of the crisis in Bangladesh. As the situation continues to evolve, the silence from the US on this matter may speak volumes about the shifting dynamics in South Asia.
