Aakhir Tak – In Depth
New Zealand recorded a historic 8-wicket victory over India in Bengaluru, marking their first Test win on Indian soil in 36 years. The last time New Zealand won a Test in India was in 1988. On the fifth day, New Zealand successfully chased a 107-run target, showcasing outstanding performance throughout the match.
Will Young played a key role in New Zealand’s chase, remaining unbeaten on 48 runs. Rachin Ravindra also contributed with 39 not out, steering New Zealand to victory. Jasprit Bumrah provided early resistance for India, taking 2 wickets, but New Zealand chased down the target in 27.4 overs.
In the first innings, New Zealand bowled India out for just 46 runs, a collapse that proved to be a turning point in the match. This victory is monumental for New Zealand, as it is only their third Test win in India in 69 years of touring the country. Previously, Graham Dowling (1969) and John Wright (1988) led New Zealand to Test wins in India, and now Tom Latham joins this elite group with his leadership in 2024.
New Zealand’s victory is significant, given India’s dominant record at home. Despite India’s efforts to bounce back, their first-innings collapse ultimately sealed their defeat. Bumrah’s bowling created early pressure, but New Zealand’s batters, especially Will Young, handled the challenge with composure, guiding their team to a well-deserved victory.
With momentum on their side, New Zealand will now look forward to the second Test, scheduled in Pune on October 24, as they aim to build on their success.
