In a recent announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that new Aadhaar card applicants in Assam must now provide their National Register of Citizens (NRC) application receipt number (ARN). Sarma revealed this decision during a press conference in Guwahati, highlighting concerns about the rising number of Aadhaar applications, which exceed the state’s population.
The Chief Minister expressed concerns about the authenticity of Aadhaar applications in Assam, implying the presence of doubtful citizens. “Applications for Aadhaar cards are more than the population. It indicates that there are doubtful citizens, and we have decided that new applicants will have to submit their NRC application receipt number (ARN),” Sarma stated.
This step, according to Sarma, aims to stop the influx of illegal foreigners into the state. He emphasized that the Assam government will be stringent in issuing Aadhaar cards under these new rules. “It will not be easy to get Aadhaar in Assam,” Sarma remarked, indicating the government’s firm stance on the matter.
However, this requirement does not apply to the 9.55 lakh individuals whose biometrics were locked during the NRC process. These individuals will receive their Aadhaar cards without needing to submit an ARN, Sarma clarified.
In addition, the Chief Minister mentioned the state government’s intensified efforts to identify and deport illegal foreigners. He noted that several Bangladeshis were apprehended in the past two months and handed over to the authorities of the neighboring country.
Assam’s new Aadhaar application rule is part of the government’s broader effort to safeguard the state’s demographic integrity and curb illegal immigration. This decisive move underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining accurate records and protecting its citizens’ rights.
The directive to submit the NRC receipt number adds another layer of verification, ensuring that only eligible individuals receive their Aadhaar cards. Sarma’s government remains vigilant, with strict measures to identify and deport illegal foreigners who enter Assam.
With this new requirement, the Assam government sends a clear message about its dedication to upholding the integrity of Aadhaar issuance. As Sarma mentioned, “We will be very strict in issuing Aadhaar cards,” signaling a robust approach to addressing concerns about illegal foreigner influx in Assam.
