Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Delhi Assembly election was being seen as a do-or-die battle for both Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP. With the BJP all set to form the government in Delhi after 27 years, it has not only signalled a rejection of Kejriwal’s leadership but has also potentially dismantled the AAP’s ambitions of becoming a pan-Indian alternative to the BJP. But, was AAP’s national ambitions its achilles heel? The Delhi Election result raises many questions.
Political commentator and analyst Rajat Sethi thinks so. “Never take your partner for granted. He (Arvind Kejriwal) ignored Delhi and kept flirting with other states,” Sethi told India Today while assessing AAP’s poll loss. Arvind Kejriwal (Arvind Kejriwal) has a lesson to learn from this defeat.
Hailed as one of the most successful political startups in recent political history, the AAP has made a swift ascent to national prominence since forming its first government in Delhi in 2013 with Congress’s help. Since then, the AAP has gone on to contest Assembly elections in Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana.
However, apart from forming a government in Punjab, mostly at the expense of the Congress, and winning two seats in Gujarat, the AAP has little to show in its CV.
The AAP’s shift in focus on other states, especially during its second term, has led to the BJP to claim that the party neglected Delhi and not doing much in terms of infrastructural development.
This seems to have led to resentment among the middle class, which comprises a big chunk of Delhi’s voters. The middle class’s unhappiness over the AAP’s governance record on issues such as air and water pollution, and an unclean Yamuna seems to have paid dividends for the BJP. This Delhi Election (Delhi Election) has been a profitable deal for the BJP.
