The Indian government has summoned Netflix India content head Monika Shergill today, asking her to explain the controversial depiction of hijackers in the series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. This move comes amid heated discussions on social media regarding the portrayal of terrorists using Hindu aliases in the show.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting directed Shergill to appear and explain the allegedly contentious aspects of the web series. This directive was issued following complaints that the series misrepresented facts, particularly regarding the identity of the hijackers, which upset public sentiments.

The IC 814 Controversy:

The series ‘IC 814’ is based on the real-life hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 in 1999 by Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. The show dramatizes the experiences of passengers and the challenges faced by the government as the flight was diverted across several locations before landing in Taliban-controlled Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Criticism arose when the series used Hindu codenames—Bhola and Shankar—for two of the hijackers, leading to accusations that the show was downplaying the fact that the terrorists were Muslim. The issue has sparked a larger debate on the responsibility of content creators in portraying historical events accurately, especially those that deeply affect public sentiment.

Government Response:

The government stated, “No one has the right to play with the emotions of this country. India’s culture and values must be upheld, and the portrayal of sensitive issues should be handled with care.”

This controversy has brought the series’ director Anubhav Sinha under scrutiny, with critics arguing that the depiction should have made it clear that the hijackers were Muslim terrorists using Hindu aliases. The series adaptation is based on the book ‘Flight into Fear: The Captain’s Story’ by journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury and Captain Devi Sharan, the pilot of the hijacked flight.

Despite the controversy, the performances have been widely praised for their depth and authenticity.
